Zusammenfassung: | The "Research and Technology Report for 2002", prepared by ARC Seibersdorf Research, Joanneum, Technopolis Austria and WIFO within the scope of the "tip – technology information policy consulting" programme, provides insights into the current situation for innovators in Austria and acts as a source of information on the current state and status of technology policy in the country. Spending on research in Austria, while rising in the 1990s, still does not reflect the economic capacity of the country. In terms of publications per inhabitants, Austrian researchers rank somewhere in the middle of a European scale. Considerable strength in the medium education segment contrasts with an extraordinarily low share of graduates of tertiary education. The economy suffers from structural deficits in its technological performance, the consequence of an above-average share of labour-intensive sectors and a below-average share of technology-based sectors.
