Zusammenfassung:summary: the paper is concerned with the relation between influence in decision-making and the performance of research units working in austrian universities and industrial organizations. data are drawn from unesco's first round international comparative study of the organization and performance of research units. a mediation between the two sets of variables is first established by theoretical arguments. they concentrate on the acquisition of expert information, the adequacy of coordination mechanisms and the disposal of resources as more structural factors on one hand and the effects on motivation and legitimacy of decisions as more individual factors on the other hand. distinguishing different concepts of influence and taking into consideration position effects in their measurement, the hypotheses are evaluated on a bivariate and multivariate level. the results indicate - as a very gross summarization - that the amount of influence exerted by the research unit as a whole on decisions which are of concern to it has some positive effect on most performance dimensions.;
