Zusammenfassung:Summary: Wage dispersion in Austria is high by international standards. This paper shows that substantial inter-industry wage differentials remain after controlling for human capital, job characteristics and regional effects. The similarity of the Austrian and the German wage structure is remarkable. The Austrian wage structure cannot be explained by the hypothesis of compensating differentials or by transitory demand shifts. Efficiency wage arguments are not fully convincing either. More empirical work is needed to uncover the rationale for the observed wage structure.;
